The Vintage Soles Collection | Q&A with Caitlin Bendiak

"My hope is that when someone wears these Vintage Sole styles, there is a feeling of empowerment and a sense of adventure–that they feel like they can take on the world!"

–Caitlin Bendiak, Head of Product

To uncover the inspiration behind The Vintage Soles Collection, we interviewed our very own Head of Product, Caitlin Bendiak. We discussed design elements, key considerations, and the backdrop that led to the three new colorways, each inspired by aviation history.

Q: How did aviation history inspire the colorways and design elements in this collection?

A: The P.F. Flyers mantra has long been 'Run faster. Jump higher.' The modern-day addition to our slogan is to 'Fly Free.' We added this to inspire and empower the 'Flyers' of today to take on the world with confidence. So, the spirit of flight and new adventures is fuel for everything that we do. A point of inspiration for this collection was the storied history and beginnings of aviation. We looked back at the old photographs, newspapers, stamps, and paintings from that era and that inspired this collection.

Our Classic Center-Hi's need no introduction, however, this reimagining is hoped to bring even more spirit and life to those looking to Run faster, Jump higher, and Fly free. We want to stay grounded in our heritage while inspiring the next generation.

Q: What were some key considerations in modernizing the classic Center Hi while staying true to its historical roots?

A: It is always important to stay true to the past and keep style classic, while also leveraging modern materials and finishes. This is how we approached the collection. We chose classic canvas colors that could have been available in the 1930s, 40s or 50s and modernized the details, like the finish of the logo patch and laces.

Q: What made Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, an inspiring backdrop for the collection?

A: In the early 1900s, there were great pioneers of flight exploration —notably the Wright brothers and Amelia Earhart. The first flight in an aircraft was made possible by the Wright Brothers in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. So, the location made for a perfect backdrop to photograph these styles that were inspired by the groundbreaking flight.

Incorporating the spirit of pioneering aviation into each frame, the collection captured against the backdrop of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, celebrates the daring feat of past giants who wished to fly higher. These styles embody a fusion of timeless elegance with the boundless ambition that took flight at Kitty Hawk.

Q: What do you hope wearers will feel when they put on a pair from the Vintage Soles Collection?

A: My hope is that when someone wears these Vintage Sole styles, there is a feeling of empowerment and a sense of adventure–that they feel like they can take on the world!

Q: Which aviation-themed fashion trend from history deserves a comeback, and which colorway from the Vintage Soles collection would you style it with?

A: A leather aviator or bomber jacket never goes out of style. That's what I would bring back. I'd love to find a vintage jacket to style with the Black/Gum colorway of the Center.

From bomber jackets to plain white tees, we're captivated by the countless ways you can style The Classic Center Hi. Featuring fresh updates and exciting new colorways, these sneakers invite everyone to embark on their own unique adventures in style.
